INTRODUCTION:

While the parameters of the assignment were flexible, I feel that I have outlined a good summary of the events which occurred this semester which related to:
  • events occurring now which mirror those of the past
    (SOPA/PIPA, PCT difficulties)
  • injustices and the uproar caused by them
(SOPA/PIPA, death penalty, Occupy Wall Street)
  • Republican inability to make choices which benefit the people or make much sense
(Rick Perry and the “War on Christianity”, Republicans vs. Science)

Included are:

  • 24 links to articles, web pages, letters, etc.
  • 2 videos
  • some hopefully-relevant humor/odds ‘n ends

barackobama:

“The average income of the top 1 percent has gone up by more than 250 percent to $1.2 million per year … For the top one hundredth of 1 percent, the average income is now $27 million per year. The typical CEO who used to earn about 30 times more than his or her worker now earns 110 times more. And yet, over the last decade the incomes of most Americans have actually fallen by about 6 percent.”

—President Obama speaking in Osawatomie, Kansas, yesterday about what he calls a “make or break moment” for the middle class

[1][Article] RICK PERRY’S NEW TV AD, “STRONG” (Associated Press Article)

ANALYSIS: Struggling for traction in the Republican contest, Perry is gambling that the religious conservatives who typically dominate Iowa’s kickoff caucuses will warm to his candidacy if he appeals to them with a socially conservative message. He’s also drawing a contrast with rival Mitt Romney — whose Mormon faith gives many evangelicals pause — and Newt Gingrich, who recently converted to Catholicism but has been divorced twice and has acknowledged infidelity in his first two marriages.

But this ad, which attacks President Barack Obama on gay rights and religion, is misleading and inaccurate.

rebecca’s notes:
while this is hardly the worst we’ve heard from rick perry (his track-record for executions holding that title), it is still incredibly absurd and incredibly offensive. implying that allowing gays to serve openly in the military is wrong is one thing—but to imply that it is their fault this supposed ‘war on christmas’ has occurred is both incorrect and maddening. it is people like this—people with access to the attention of millions of americans—who continue the spread of sexual-orientation-based (or racial, for that matter) intolerance.
